As an Aussie, I love a good barbie. Apart from anything else, it’s a great chance to get the Aussie men to cook. They love it – standing outside over the flame with a stubbie (bottle of beer) in one hand and a pair of tongs in the other.
You’d think they’d caught and killed the meat themselves instead of getting it out of the fridge (where we have most likely put it after buying it and preparing it!).
Anyway, this is my mum’s recipe for burgers. You don’t have to cook them on the barbie, but they taste a lot better if you do.
1kg mince (beef or lamb)
1 finely chopped onion
1 sachet of French onion soup
A handful of breadcrumbs
A good glug of tomato ketchup
Mix together well in a bowl. Then, scoop out with your hands and pat into balls the size of a small fist. Put into the fridge and wait for the hunter gatherer to return from his game of golf…
