Cafe De Flore

I've had precious few nights in over the past couple of weeks as the Christmas party season gets into swing, but I did find time on one of them to settle down in front of Cafe De Flore.

Named after the famous Parisien coffeehouse and meeting place, this is not necessarily the film to get you in a festive mood, but a very powerful and very sad pair of intertwined love stories - one set in 1969 Paris between a mother and her Down's Syndrome son, the other between a superstar DJ in modern day Montreal and his new lover.

There is an air of tragic inevitability about the story, but its sadness derives in part from the fact you can see it coming but know there's nothing you or anyone else can do about it.
