In conversation with... Isabelle Palmer

Who are you and what do you do?

I am Isabelle Palmer and I am the founder of an online gardening company The Balcony Gardener. We specialise in container gardens and stylish products for small urban outdoor spaces such as balconies, patios, roof terraces, window sills etc.

My second book has just been published called The House Gardener. It’s about decorating with hip house plants. Indoor gardening has become my new passion.

Where did you work beforehand?

My background is in consumer PR.

How do you relax/switch off?

Gardening of course ! I love nothing better than to potter around my two small balconies and now I have my own allotment where I have an orchard and will be growing a lot more of my own fruit and vegetables. I also really enjoy cooking so will be looking forward to using my own home-grown produce.  And I’m loving designing and creating the new range of terrariums we have on the site.

Favourite book?

I’m a bit of history geek. I love to read anything to do with the Mitford Sisters.

Favourite film?

The Virgin Suicides by Sofia Copolla. Beautifully shot and an incredible soundtrack.

Favourite blog/website?

Remodelista.com

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Sweets – I adore them, mostly the sweet and sour ones much to my dentist’s dismay. I could open a sweet shop in my apartment !

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today, great advice offered by my father.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Paolo Nuttini ‘s Caustic Love

What’s your advice for novice gardeners?

Start small, don’t go and spend a lot of money. Build up your confidence, there is nothing worse than investing too much time, money and energy and watching it all die. Oh and water… water …water !
