How did Gower Cottage Brownies come about?
My Brownies have for many years been a firm favourite with family & friends and when my father in law set up a small community village shop, it was suggested I make some for there in order to get a bit of pin money being a stay at home mum.
We live in a beautiful area and come the summer the tourists came and started asking if they could get the brownies wherever they lived in the country, it was then I came across the idea of sending them by post, in the meantime I also entered them into the True Taste of Wales Award and they won.
This then made me realise that they must be pretty good and so I set up the website and started to send out samples to Food Editors of Magazines & Newspapers and all of them began to rave about them.
And here we are 4 years on with over 5000 online regular customers, 35+ wholesale outlets across the country...
How do you relax/switch off?
Working from home and running your own business, doesn't allow a great deal of down time, but when I get a chance I am a complete bookworm and have recently taken up growing my own veggies plus of course running to one of our numerous beaches with the kids every chance we get.
Favourite book of all time, gosh so many… most recently read The Blasphemers by Nigel Farndale which was gripping all the way through& v thought provoking, City of Thieves sticks in my mind by David Benioff and for anyone who hasn't read The Red Tent by Anita Diamant I think it is a must....as you can see, book mad, I could go on listing them forever!
Favourite film could possibly be The Kite Runner, the only ever film that has lived up to an incredible book, Last King of Scotland was amazing, but if we go way back I have always adored Gone with The Wind.
Favourite website or blog?
Favourite blog, is by a lady I found via Twitter known as @bigfashionista. Her blog relates to life in general & some product reviews (mainly in make-up which have never been a fan of) but the way in which she writes seems to hit home exactly what I am thinking on so many subjects and in such a hilarious way.
Favourite website is Forbes Style by the lovely Emma Forbes who rates and reviews all things from foodie to fashion, I was introduce to Emma via Twitter which is another favourite website of mine which I use to chat, talk food & generally socialise with like-minded peeps as well as run regular Free Gower Cottage Brownie competitions, you can find me there as @gowercottage do come along & join the fun!
What’s your guilty pleasure?
My guilty pleasure is trashy reality TV, I can’t deny it, but the truth is out, I’m an Xfactor/Stricly/Britains Got Talent addict....you name it I love it!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
The best advice I've ever been given is from my mother, and is all about work ethic and how she drummed into me from an early age that you can achieve anything you want through hard work and positive attitude, plus always treat others as you would like to be treated yourself, which is what I apply to my customers & staff.
What are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment I'm listening to lots of Eurovision Trash, (please refer to guilty pleasure section)! Apart from that I recently downloaded Adele's new album along with Mumford & Sons. One of my favourite songs is Red by Daniel Merriweather.
Kate Jenkins is the founder of Gower Cottage Brownies.
