How Ruth Crilly wears hush

Fashion model, writer and beauty insider, Ruth Crilly, tells us how she wears hush... Thank you, Ruth!

I’ve always been partial to a spot of knitwear layering and so it’s no surprise that Hush’s autumn-winter collections make me feel so warm and fuzzy inside. Layers of soft cotton and smooth, fine knits thrown on in a seemingly effortless way with chunky wool sweaters and cosy scarves. I say seemingly effortless because layering does require a little thought – it’s easy to get it wrong and end up looking shapeless or over-padded!

Successful layering relies on striking a good balance between building volume (think oversized sweater piled up with an even bigger cardy and topped off with a scarf) and still having some definition and shape to the body. (Wearing simple black tights, skinny jeans or leggings on the bottom half is an easy way of ticking that particular box.)

Successful layering also relies on quality fabrics and finishes – sumptuous, luxurious knits and well-cut shapes that drape flatteringly over the body. An oversized sweater isn’t just a jumper that’s two sizes too big – a good cut will perhaps slip seductively from a bare shoulder, or have a deep V-neck that reveals a flash of skin. It’s not about hiding away under mountains of wool, it’s about creating texture and contrast and shape.

My favourite looks in the A/W collection showcase acres of leg (albeit clad in warm black tights!) and chic, stylish layering from the waist up. I love the long, waterfall cardigans and the animal print scarves (I’m more than partial to a spot of animal print) and the flashes, here and there, of pristine white cotton and grey marl sleeves. Styling ideas aplenty, I think, and if you were really stuck as to how to go about layering, you could always do what I have been known to do. Simply copy the entire look, straight out of the campaign. Often it can’t be improved upon!
