The Mr & Mrs Smith guide to Amsterdam

This season, we’ve teamed up with boutique hotel specialists Mr & Mrs Smith to offer one lucky couple a two-night stay in Amsterdam, plus £500 worth of hush clothing. Read on for their hot tips for anyone visiting this must-see destination.

The city with a village mentality, where ducks compete for canal-bank space with disoriented tourists, is hotter than ever. With the reopening of the Rijksmuseum and a whole host of festivals and cultural events planned for the rest of the year, now is the time to graduate from the red-light district and explore one of Europe’s most picturesque, liveliest cities.

Where to eat and drink?

The legendary Supperclub is as popular as ever thanks to the mixture of food, music, performances and art to tickle all your five senses, but our top recommendation is to book dinner on its boat (, with live DJs and dancing till late.

Alternatively, for a truly traditional Dutch experience in hip surroundings head to The Blonde Hollander. Here you can stuff yourself with herrings, onion, gherkin, rissoles, mashed potatoes and meatballs. But go somewhere else if you’re on a diet - traditional Dutch dishes are meaty and filling, and the portions here are huge.

Where to shop?

For designer labels, go to PC Hooftstraat. We prefer the Nine Streets though - a grid within the canal network that is packed with boutiques and curiosity shops. We love DOM on Spuistraat, for all kinds of items you never thought you needed.

For markets, on Saturdays and Mondays head to Noordermarkt for organic food and bric-à-brac, or the bigger, touristier Waterlooplein market for second-hand clothes. Albert Cuypmarkt in the Pijp claims to be Europe’s longest street market.

Where to stay?

Enter our competition to win a two-night stay at Sir Albert Hotel, a dazzling former diamond factory in the heart of the city. The hotel is situated in the busy De Pijp district, which is home to the Albert Cuypmarkt market and just minutes away from the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum.
