How did Bookish come about?
I love books and with the move towards ebooks and Kindles I really wanted to capture the beauty of real books. At bookish we curate, find and design the very best book gifts and literary ideas. We’ve got everything from gorgeous paper roses made out of old literary pages, to upcycled book handbags and vintage novel artwork.
How do you relax/switch off?
It’s clichéd but I love taking a long, hot bath with a mug of tea, a good book and lots of candles. I also love to get away from it all and travel to different corners of the world. It’s fun to find bookish products in other countries. I recently found some amazing notebooks and envelopes in Mumbai that we’ll be bringing to the online store soon.
So many! But Jane Eyre has always been a favourite classic. I’ve read it four times and will read it again and again and again. I can always find something different in it. The best book I’ve read recently is Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Everyone should read this book; it’s really beautifully written, incredibly funny and thought-provoking.
I’m slightly obsessed with Letters of Note. And I regularly check out Book Aid’s website – they’re a fantastic charity we support doing brilliant things getting books to people in Africa.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Peanut butter straight from the jar (crunchy, not smooth).
What are you listening to at the moment?
I have a seven week old baby son, and the ONLY thing that will get him to sleep at night is this random track by Dada Life that we stumbled across. It’s not really my thing (big Swedish electro house beats!), but it helps him sleep so I’m kind of stuck with it! On my playlist I’ve got Kate Bush’s 50 Words for Snow which is wonderfully wintery.
What’s on your Christmas wishlist this year?
hush PJs and cashmere goodies, as always! Plus I’d love a new kitchen mixer for whipping up cake mix and some lovely big storm lanterns. Oh, and some snow.
