Ways to look after your clothes

Reasons to take better care of your clothes: you’ll get more wear out of them, you’ll save money, and you’ll keep them out of landfill for much longer. Sounds simple enough, right? But there might be some things that are reducing the lifespan of your clothes without you even realising. So, we’ve pulled together some tips to keep your Hush pieces looking and feeling good as new for years to come – that’s what we made them for, after all.

Wash low and less

When it comes to cleaning your clothes, some simple swaps can reduce energy, water and harmful chemical usage, while also extending their lifecycle. We make the majority of our products cool-machine or hand washable, limiting the need for chemical-based dry cleaning and helping the environment in the process.

The best thing you can do when it comes to caring for your clothes is this: don’t wash things unless you really need to. It doesn’t just save energy and water – it helps clothes last longer. In between washes, try a natural refreshing spray and air out garments after each wear instead of putting them straight in the laundry basket – this is a great way to freshen up your jeans, which wear much better if you wash them less.

When you do wash things, check the label and wash them on the coolest setting, or use your machine’s quick or eco-wash setting. You may want to use a Guppyfriend wash bag for synthetic items to capture microplastics that may be released through washing – this prevents them from going into water sources and harming marine life.

We’d always recommend choosing non-bio or eco-friendly laundry detergents and fabric softeners. Not only are they better for our skin, but many are also designed to be as effective on a cool wash as they are on a hot one.

Turn down the heat

Warm out? It’s best to let nature do the job whenever possible and line-dry your clothes rather than using a tumble dryer. Not only does this save energy, but it helps to prevent clothes from wearing out too quickly, as the heat of your tumble dryer can wear down fabric fibres and cause them to disintegrate over time. Line-drying also limits creases, which means you might not need to iron as much.

You can’t always avoid ironing, but it’s best to limit how often you do, as the intense heat of the iron plate can cause damage to the fabric fibres over time. Try steaming instead for a gentler process, and always follow the care label.

Store with care

If you can, choose wooden hangers instead of plastic. Knits are always best folded in drawers, as hanging them up might distort their shape over time and cause the yarns to stretch. It’s a great idea to invest in cedarwood and lavender bags, which are natural moth repellents that can be used to protect wool and cashmere.

Whether folding or hanging, treat your clothes with care and try not to overfill your wardrobe or drawers to avoid creating more creases.

Mend it, don’t end it

Usually a needle and thread can fix minor wear and tear. We sew spare buttons into the care label and provide extra embellishments where they might be needed. If you’re not confident in your sewing skills for certain repairs, a local alteration service can help.
