Pinot, plants and practical advice: the best series to add to your library

Whoever said books are our best companions clearly hadn’t listened to a banging podcast. In a year when so many of us have been separated from our friends and social lives, having a few familiar voices chatting in your ears about topics you love, loathe and want to learn more about is remarkably comforting. They’re also great for multitasking – and who wouldn’t want to brush up on their wine trivia while also getting their steps in?

We consider ourselves to be podcast connoisseurs here at hush HQ, so we’ve compiled a list of some of our favourites to mix up your in-ear dialogue. So, whether you need some no-nonsense life advice, tips on how to make your plants flourish, or want to brush up on your wine trivia, here are our five current favourites.

The one for: when you miss travelling

In response to not being able to go anywhere or do, well, anything for the past year comes Alan Carr’s latest podcast. Life’s a Beach injects some much-needed sunshine and escapism back into our lives by asking his guests about their favourite destinations and where they can’t wait to visit post-pandemic. Plus, the line-up is seriously good, with names like Michael McIntire, Jessie Ware and Romesh Ranganathan joining him over Zoom. Listen on Spotify.

The one for: straight-talking advice

If you’re familiar with Sarah Knight’s best-selling self-help books The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F**k and Get Your Sh*t Together, you’ll know what to expect when listening to her new podcast series No F*cks Given. She dishes out brutally honest, hilarious and practical life advice with more swearing than Gordon Ramsey in a hot kitchen – wait until the kids are out of earshot for this one. Listen on Spotify.

The one for: wannabe plant mums

Keep killing your snake plants? Can’t even keep aloe alive? Let us introduce you to Jade of Black Plant Chick Pod, owner of a thriving plant care consultancy; who seriously knows her ferns from her fiddle-leaf figs. Full of green-fingered knowledge and advice on everything from watering and lighting to soil choice (yep, there are good and bad types of soil) and re-potting. Each episode is a soothing haven for anyone who fancies creating their own home jungle. Listen on Apple Podcasts.

The one for: showing off in the beer garden

If your love of liquid grapes knows no bounds, Wine Face is your new audio sommelier. Helen Johannessen, from LA store Helen’s Wines, serves us 15-minute classes to take our wine knowledge to the next level. She runs you through how each type of wine is made, what you should drink and answers all your wine-related questions (like WTF is orange wine?). Basically, it’ll have you ready to impress your pals at the pub when they re-open – cheers! Listen on Spotify.

The one for: thoughtful career conversations

Reminding us that kindness is the best currency is retail guru and ‘Queen of Shops’ Mary Portas. Her new podcast series, The Kindness Economy, explores the business landscape through the lens of people, the planet and profit. She also chats to entrepreneurs – in everything from fashion to architecture – about how we can all make the world of work a much more pleasant place. Listen on Spotify.
