60 Second Review: An American Marriage

Our creative director and founder, Mandy, shares her thoughts on her latest read...

"My daughter saw me reading (and obviously loving) this book the other day and asked me what it was about. The answer, I guess, is not much – and everything. On the face of it, it’s the beautifully written story of what happens to the marriage of an Afro-American couple when the husband is wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for rape. It’s narrated from the perspectives of the three main characters – Roy, an ambitious young black man who has moved to Atlanta and is seemingly the embodiment of the American Dream; his wife Celestial, a doll designer on the brink of a successful artistic career; and Andre, Celestial’s neighbour and oldest friend, to whom she turns for support when Roy is sent away. But the injustice of the situation is so powerful (and the effect on the various relationships so brilliantly observed) that I know this is a book that will stay with me for a long time."
