BERMUDA SHORTS ARE BACK

You probably saw this headline and fell into one of two camps: the ‘yes I’m feeling this trend’ lot and the ‘no thank you’ group. I’m probably being polite – it was a ‘hell no’, wasn’t it. Bermuda shorts can be marmite (sorry Mandy, Vegemite) like that. But we’re strongly of the opinion that they shouldn’t be. The vibe is less school-ish, more Julia Roberts’ short-suit in Pretty Woman. They’re great for summer weather (obviously) but still make you feel put-together – which isn’t always easy to achieve when public transport becomes hotter than your friend’s new pizza oven. So, we asked three shorts-averse Hush women to try them out. Spoiler alert: they’re converted.

FOR DINNER PLANS

"It’s hard to know what to wear when you’re meeting friends in the city after work – sometimes a dress just seems too dressy. I think these are the perfect solution for those times you want to feel chic but also nonchalant and practical. The colours might be dark but the fabrics are so light – the shorts are a linen blend, and the blouse is slightly sheer and floaty. I’ve made the look feel cocktail-bar appropriate with big shiny earrings and a studded bag to match: I love how the silver metal just lifts the whole look. As for shoes, I think flat sandals work so well with these shorts. But if it was colder? Knee-high boots.” – Eve, Buying Assistant

“I’m a denim girl all year round, but I can’t lie, I was a little apprehensive about this shape, which is a bit slimmer than a classic Bermuda. I’m so glad I tried them out though, because I love how this outfit looks and feels. The shorts and tee provide a super casual basis (side note: I love the graphic on the back) but the mesh flats and blazer give it an edge, and make it a bit more put-together for a Saturday full of plans. “I didn’t know if I could wear Bermuda shorts because I’m petite (5ft 1 on a good day) and I always thought they’d be too long on me. But I actually love this length!
