The live fitness classes we're joining from home

We’re all about looking for the little positives at the moment, and one of them is this: while we’re all getting used to being inside a lot more, gyms, fitness instructors and personal trainers around the world have been coming up with brilliant ideas to get us back on our feet.

At virtually any time of day, you can now join in with a live workout online, from quick HIIT sessions to slow and stretchy yoga classes. Joe Wicks, the nation’s new PE teacher, has been keeping families active at 9am every morning on TV and YouTube. Mr Motivator, meanwhile, has lunged back onto our screens as part of BBC One’s Healthcheck UK Live.

At hush, we’re loving joining in – not only because these sessions fit so easily into our spaces and schedules, but also because they allow us to feel connected with other people, even if we’ve never met them IRL.

Have a look at some of our favourite channels below, and we’ll see you in class.

For a bit of everything: Digme Fitness

Digme Fitness were the first studio we noticed broadcasting free workouts on Instagram Live, and we’ve been joining in their morning yoga classes ever since. They post daily schedules to their Instagram feeds and Stories, helping us get organised, and their range of classes also includes HIIT, full body and breathwork. It’s our new favourite way to start the day.

For HIIT: Barry’s Bootcamp

Barry’s already has a reputation as one of the toughest exercise classes in London, and they’ve been making sure we have absolutely no excuse to sit around by bringing Barry’s Bootcamp home on Instagram. Last week, they kept us sweating with their gruelling 30-minutes full body workouts. This week, they kicked things up a gear with an at-home version of their infamous “Hell Week” challenge – 7 classes in 7 days. Phew!

For strength training: Third Space

Luxury London health club Third Space already offers online video classes to their members but, starting last week, they joined the host of gyms offering workouts for free on Instagram. On their channel, you’ll be able to join in with their signature classes, like The WOD (Workout of the Day) which focuses on strength training and HIIT, as well as Yin Yoga and some hardcore Core.

For yoga and barre: FLY LDN

Calling themselves “immersive yoga + fitness for non-yogis,” this London studio has been hosting free daily classes on Instagram at 8am, 12:30pm and 6pm on Instagram (so that’s pre-work, lunch break and clocking-off covered). Their offering mostly focuses on yoga, pilates and barre, and their low-impact class is ideal if you have downstairs neighbours and/or creaky floors to content with. Give them a follow and go with the flow.

For dance: School of SOS

Dance studio Seen On Screen has invited followers to join them on the virtual dancefloor and learn routines at home, via their School of SOS Instagram channel. Pick up slick choreography to hits from The Pussycat Dolls and Meghan Trainor, strut like Beyoncé, and even learn how to twerk (why not – who’s watching?) Heels are optional.
