Style Notes: Grown-up sportswear
There was a time when sportswear was something you put on before exercising. Off you popped to the gym/an exercise class/for a run; on went the sportswear.
How charmingly retro this now sounds. It’s become a luxe front row staple – and a regular fixture in the style canon. Perhaps it started with the upmarket glossification of health and fitness? Maybe it began when Chanel teamed ballgowns with trainers or when cult label Vetements produced a track pant that caused a virtual stampede amongst fashion editors?
Or perhaps it was inevitable that we would realise that the comfort of gym clothes would – with a few tweaks – work just as well for brunch as they do for yoga? Whatever the reason, it has officially become a style stalwart. It even has its own term: athleisurewear. You might wear it everyday but – whisper it – never so much as set foot in a gym.
“Sportswear is a trend that continues to evolve as more and more designers utilise sporty silhouettes,” note the hush design team. What this means for you is that, however much you want to invest in the aesthetic, there’s a place for you. Keep it simple and channel Vogue’s Deputy Editor Sarah Harris who teams her side-stripe luxe joggers with a cashmere sweater. Try the Velour Straight Leg Joggers with the Nana knit or an oversized cashmere jumper for a look that’s become a front row staple. Never under-estimate the flexibility of the luxe track pant: at hush HQ we have long been pairing our harems with heels and wearing joggers in place of jeans; update this for AW18 by trying them with a shirt and blazer.
For the bold(er), there is the option of “leggings with everything”. Try them instead of tights with a floral dress or with our Cashmere Boyfriend Jumper layered over a long-sleeve tee. Basic black leggings get an upgrade in leopard print for a look which feels fresh. According to the hush philosophy, “it’s the clash that makes it modern. We love pieces that feel slightly more retro and have unusual colour combinations.” So that’s a laidback sweatshirt (or a Hooded Dolman Sloppy Joe) dressing down a midi skirt. Feeling tentative? Try our sheer Marina Skirt. Or follow the lead of Mandy and the design team and play on the hi-low mix by pairing a hoodie with the asymmetric Clarissa Satin Skirt.
And on your feet? Trainers are the obvious retort, and, admittedly, they pair brilliantly with our joggers and a side-stripe trousers. But our design team favour another clash: “Biker or ski boots!” It’s all about the unexpected.
