Rather like animal print, this season our wardrobe doesn’t quite feel complete without a shimmer of metallic. In previous years, metallic trends have been focussed on futuristic, space-age flashiness, or highly-embellished styles – but right now, metallics have struck a more cool and wearable note.
Glittery stilettos have been replaced by striking metallic ankle boots (as seen all over Instagram); the sweet-wrapper shine of last-season’s pleated midi, is now a more muted, burnished gold; midi dresses are streaked with subtle, shimmering threads; metallic knitwear gets a refresh with ombre effects and contrasting stars, and all-over sequins are now just a laidback sprinkle.
The result? Metallics are more versatile than ever. A sophisticated alternative to all-black eveningwear, or a stylish spin on an easy jeans-and-jumper uniform. No longer saved for ‘special’ occasions, the new metallics are to be embraced whenever the mood takes you.
The same goes for beauty: metallic eye shadow isn’t just a ‘party look’, a chic flick of gold or bronze eyeliner makes a great day-time alternative to your regular black winged liner (although metallic brows might be an Insta-trend too far for most of us). Chrome nails, cheekbones dusted with metallic highlighters, sparkling pots of intense foiled pigment…
You needn’t be an interiors obsessive to know that rose gold and copper have well and truly taken over homewares, too. Plant pots, coffee tables, plates, lamps - they've all been touched by Midas. Geometric metallic wallpapers are the latest iteration of the metallic takeover.
Why are we so in love with metallics? Their light-reflecting powers - all the better in these dark and gloomy months. The little shot of joy they bring to the every day. Or simply their magpie appeal: who can resist something shiny? Just as leopard print has gone from brassy to a style essential, we’d argue that a metallic midi or ankle boot is well on its way to becoming a wardrobe staple. (Wishful thinking? Can you tell we’re mad for metallics?)
Whether you keep your metallics reserved for festive occasions (in which case we recommend combining it with luxe textures like velvet or devore), or you're mixing them in to your everyday look (our new gold Chelsea Upton Boots look amazing with jeans), the new metallics tick all the right boxes. Grown-up, not gaudy. Chic, not cheap. Fun and flattering.
