A RED-GOLD RESPITE
With the crunch of autumn leaves
underfoot and the cacophony of cars
falling away behind me, I escape
into the wilderness of the woods again.
And here in this red-gold paradise
the trees stand tall and austere in welcome
I'm still when I see it. The last of the doe
peacefully drinking water by the stream.
She lifts her majestic head and looks at me
as if to say do you hear it? And I do.
In the silence of the newly bare forest,
I can finally hear my thoughts singing.
